Overview – The Kit One Big Ring Helmet has 33 vents which is a lot by any standards, up to 15 more than some of the other helmet brands, by having so many vents it allows you to have good air flow and heat dissipation at all speeds and at any angle. This smaller multiple vent helmet design also adds strength which in-turn allows for helmet that is dramatically compact in its overall size – No huge unproportionable “helmet-head” here it keeps you looking good and cool.

We also strived to keep the helmet shape prominently rounded, this improves aero in the changeable environments, wind direction is always changing on a bike – the round shape also in crash impact situation will tend to roll better and not catch edge as easy.

Over the past 50 years the humble bicycle helmet has gone from a padded leather “hair-net” which had very little impact protection to what we see today, once helmets began to use special EPS (Foam Liners) the we achieved a dramatic step forward in a helmets ability to absorb impacts, in-molding of polycarbonate outer shells which are then “fused” to the outer surface of the EPS foam liner further improved Air-Flow strength and allow for more technical designs to be realized.  Ring-Fit harness systems were also a great step forward improving fit of helmets to the point where you could hang upside-down without the chin strap secured and the helmet would still comfortably stay in place.

Significant improvements in helmet designs have not really been seen much in the last 10 years until NOW – The Big Ring Kit-One helmet also features a state of the art Mips® Multi Directional Impact Protection System – (designed in Sweden)  this proprietary internal harness helps reduce the force of directional impacts to your head.

We also went one step further and also upgraded the humble chin-strap buckle to a system called Fidlock® this is a patented sliding magnetic buckle system. The allows for pinch free one-handed removal and securement of the chin-strap buckle which seems like a small thing – but the improvement in functionality is quite noticeable.

The Big Ring KIT-ONE Range of Cycling apparel is one of the most comprehensive available in the World today allowing you to have matching Kit from head to toe – The Unsponsored Rider has never looked to professional!

The Big Ring being an Australian based cycling company, has to comply with the extremely high bicycle helmet safety standards regarding a helmets ability to absorb and dissipate impacts.

Australia being the first country in the World to make it mandatory that all its citizens that ride bicycles must wear Certified Bicycle Safety Helmets, this early enforcement of helmet wearing lead to the creation of a bicycle helmet standard that is considered to be one the hardest in the World to pass – in fact a lot of the helmets produced globally fail to pass the Australian Standards Certification Process.

We work closely with our manufacturing partners improving and developing designs that will pass out stringent standards.

All you need to know is that you have a Cycling Helmet that meets some of the highest protection standards in the World (AS & CE standards) Integration of the MIPS harness is also certified safety process and is 3rd level of helmet standards that our helmet is required to pass, if the helmets ability to absorb impact is not improved in meaningful way – approval to use the MIPS system is not given. All you need to know we have invested considerable time and money to make sure the fit and performance is optimal for its intended use. Great finish and meaningful cycling orientated graphic designs is another area we like to push limits, while most helmets in the market place are “pretty – conservative”.

High Strength Construction

–  In-molding construction is a technique that heats a polycarbonate outer shell and then molds the polycarbonate to the shock absorbing EPS foam liner. The hard-outer shell construction greatly enhances the strength and ventilation of the helmet by creating an exoskeleton over the shock- absorbing eps foam liner. Much like a CrabBone Structure on the outside!

Multi-Flow Streamlined Ventilation –  is achieved by strategically placing 33 air vents, for ventilation and strength. Many streamlined shaped vents decrease’s the overall size of the helmet keeping it compact and strong. Large vents are more disruptive to airflow and can cause more drag. The Helmet is designed specifically with higher speeds that maintained on road bikes for optimal airflow and aerodynamic efficiency’s

AdjustableRing Fit System (Ponytail Friendly)– ensures a custom fit that is secure and comfortable – Dial up or down to your preferred fitment tension – This in combination with the MIPS® harness, gives you the best possible protection and comfort. The Ring Fit System adjustment is done very easily with dial at the back or the helmet. The ring fit system has 4cm x 4cm x 4cm  triangle within it’s frame design at the rear that should suit a range of “pony-tail” sizes. The harness system is securely anchored into eps foam liner with molded into the helmet are Snap-Fit locations. – No Adhesive Velcro® sections with sticky emulsion backing that tend work loose with age, heat and sweat.

Sliding Magnetic Chin Strap Buckle – The patented Fidlock® fastener technology offers a number of advantages:

It enables virtually automatic closing and allows the fasteners to be opened in a user-friendly manner with just one hand – even when wearing gloves – the fastener is also highly reliable, robust and secure.

The action of the buckle is made possible by the use of slideable neodymium magnets combined with stable mechanical locking. This unique patented design allows for two different procedures when opening and closing the fastener.
When the Fidlock® fastener is closed, the magnets move towards each other due to magnetic pull and, once they connect, the magnets are automatically securely locked together, at this stage of the closure additional clamping is also provide by a mechanical locking function also engineered into the design.
When the fastener squeezed together the two parts of the buckle begin to slide – this automatically starts the opening process, the polarity of the magnets is reversed by sliding them apart, as the magnets slip into the reversed polarity position they naturally repel each other supporting the opening procedure.
It takes a little bit time to describe how it works but the easy of functionality of the buckle is intuitive and very easy to use and it definitely makes the helmet easier to live with every day.

Cam-Lock Divider Buckle – securely holds the helmet straps in-place in the location you want, it will not slip-down or ride-up, so once you adjust the helmet to your correct fit it stays correctly adjusted. The folding tab, on top half of the faceplate of the divider folds down disengaging the cam which sandwiches the two helmet straps tightly together, with the cam disengaged it is easy to adjust the Divider Buckle up and down, you can also make the straps have a wider V which can give a more comfortable fit for some riders. This secure but adjustable Divider Buckle ensures you can have more of a custom fit.

The helmet harness is Pony-Tail friendly – low in the rear of the helmet harness is a 40mm x 40mm x 40mm triangular gap which for riders who tie their hair back it a essential feature to make there riding more comfortable and potentially safer.

Microfiber Padding – Lifts and traps moisture much more efficiently than other materials – when the microfiber covering material is seam sealed together with an absorbent foam layer inside it does formidable job of holding sweat while having luxuriant feel and great durability. The Microfiber-Pad velcro’s into place as one big piece, perfectly shaped to work with the vent structure of the helmet, this allows the padding to be removed and washed easily. The singular construction has lot more strength than several small pieces, the padding durability is further enhanced by the frontal section having aopen-meshto help keep out insects, while mesh also helps bonds the open pad sections together for more strength.

Mips®   – Is a Proprietary Multi Directional Impact System, this is a very expensive up-grade that we have integrated into The Big Ring KIT-ONE helmet, it also requires another whole level of additional helmet safety certification, but we think it is well worth the additional cost and certification.

The internal harness has been specially developed in Sweden to enhance the helmets ability to disperse impact forces by the internal fitting harness having a controlled pivoting movement under impact.

It should be noted the Mips® harness inside the Kit-One helmet has a specific design/template to suit our helmet it requires unique shaping to match the helmets shape and ventilation design, with unique molded in  harness anchor locations.

The Mips® harness helps reduces the impact force from the helmet griping into the surface primarily on the first major impact with ground, reducing the overall shock to your BRAIN. With over 100,000 Mips® units in the market place all you need to know it works and it’s very impressive helmet safety technology that takes your helmet protection to next level. Want to know more go to – http://www.mipsprotection.com/  –  http://www.mipsprotection.com/history/ .

To put the difference in to context a helmet without Mips® will give good protection but potentially not same level of protection particularly in crashes where you are moving, developed originally around improving helmet safety for Motor Cyclists – this harness system is now considered to be a must by anyone upgrading their cycling helmet and wants the next level of Brain Protection.

Mips THIS IS HOW IT WORKS(manufactures description)

In a helmet with MIPS® Brain Protection System (BPS) the shell and the liner are separated by a Low Friction Layer. When a helmet with MIPS Brain Protection System is subjected to an angled impact, the low friction layer allows the helmet to slide relative to the head. The MIPS® BPS is designed to add protection in helmets against the rotational motion. The rotational motion is a combination of rotational energy (angular velocity) and rotational forces (from angular acceleration) that both affects the brain and increases the risk for minor and severe brain injuries. MIPS® BPS has been scientifically proven to reduce rotational motion when implemented in a helmet by absorbing and redirecting rotational energies and forces transferred to the brain.

STRAIN IN THE BRAIN(manufactures description)

The illustration is based on data that was generated using a finite element computer model, based on measurements obtained from nine accelerometers in a Hybrid III crash test dummy head. The dummy head wearing a helmet was subjected to an angled impact using the MIPS test rig. The model illustrates strain in the brain from a similar angled impact when the dummy head is wearing a helmet without MIPS® and a helmet with MIPS®.

Australian Standards – This is the mandatory standard used in Australia and New Zealand, AS/NZS 2063:2008—Bicycle helmets. AS/NZA 2063:2008 A bicycle helmet is designed to offer protection to the cyclist’s head during impact. The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the design, construction, performance, safety and marking of bicycle helmets. All Bicycle helmets in Australia and New Zealand need this standard to be sold and worn legally on public roads.

CE – European Conformity – EN 1078, entitled Helmets for pedal cyclists and for users of skateboards and roller skates, is a European Standard published in 1997. Compliance with this standard is one way of complying with the requirements of the European Personal Protective Equipment Directive (PPE; 89/686/EEC).EN 1078 specifies requirements and test methods for Bicycle Helmets, skateboard and roller skate helmets. It covers helmet construction including field of vision, shock absorbing properties, retention system properties including chin strap and fastening devices, as well as marking and information. This is a mandatory directive;thus, helmets must be CE-marked if they are to be sold anywhere in Europe.
